Common cranes in the south of France



Puydarrieux is a large man-made lake in the Midi-Pyrénées region in the south of France; it a quite auspicious for this specie’s overwintering as Greylag geese for other ducks such as the European wigeons and teals. It is very well protected by sign posts to prevent non compliant people to get close in order to take pictures. Unfortunately, some disregard them and create havoc which gets the birds to settle as far from humans and their cars as possible when they fly in for the night. It is such a privilege to enjoy this a spot in our area.
At last after 3 attempts, this one was successful as the birds flew past and over our heads before landing for the night:

Grues cendrées – Hautes Pyrénées, ce 4 janvier 2015

Bon nombre de grues hivernent l’hiver sur ce plan d’eau de  220 ha d’une grande beauté; on y voit des Oies cendrées ainsi que divers canards hivernants dont des Canards siffleurs et des Sarcelles d’hiver qu’on y bague; il est interdit à la promenade et les berges très dégagées favorisent la tranquillité des oiseaux et une vue dégagée pour qu’ils puissent voir les prédateurs arriver de loin. Par contre il faut oublier la proximité pour les photographes et heureusement… pour la tranquillité des oiseaux mais c’est un réel privilège d’avoir ce site dans notre région.
Enfin un jour de chance: nous sommes arrivés assez tôt et au lieu d’aller se poser à dache, à l’abri des humains et de leurs voitures, ces grands oiseaux ont tourné devant nous:
