Male Black Swallowtail

The male Black Swallowtail is less colorful than the female. It has less blue and orange markings on its dorsal wings. Shot at 400mm, ISO 400, 1/250, f/11.

Female Black Swallowtail

This is just a re-post, to show that in this species the female is more colorful and has slightly different markings with more blues than the male.

I am Maria Firpi. I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I have shot both film and digital for about 10 years and I'm a Wildlife photographer. I like to blog about birds, flora, and fauna in tropical and subtropical regions of U.S. I consider myself a fine art photographer. I seek self expression through my images. I use a Canon 60D with a 100-400mm L IS zoom lens, a 70-200mm f/4 L IS, a 60mm f/2.8, and 100mm f/2.8 from Canon. I like to observe animal behavior and document it as naturally as it was found, even when using Photoshop. I mostly shoot in lakes, beaches, and parks. Feel free to contact me. All of my images are copyrighted and registered in the Library of Congress. Please ask for permission prior to using any of the images posted here. Thanks.

Thanks. Yes, it usually is the other way around where the males are the most colorful.

Thank you Maria for these pictures. It’s one of the rare cases where the female is more colorful than male.
