Local Common buzzards

Common buzzard – Buteo buteo Accipitriformes – Accipitridae

This is the first publication out of 3 on these birds of prey. Here are 2 of the local buzzards inhabiting our property in the south of France and its surroundings. They have a dark streaky uniform plumage with white feathers lengthwise on the head and neck, widthwise on the breast and the legs. This by opposition to the buzzards coming from the Scandinavian countries to winter down here and which have a much whiter breast; I will show these in a next publication.

It is the most robust bird of prey among the common ones in our region. Under a particularly pronounced arch of the eyebrow, the piercing eyes iris vary from brown to yellowish. Armed with powerful claws, the legs are quite robust too and can seize preys the size of a hare fairly easily.

In flight, the wide and round tail distinguishes it from other raptors such as kites. Down here it is familiarly called the “Post buzzard”: these posts are ideal for them to survey their territory and an eventual prey.

Although protect since 1972 in France, it gets shot once in a while by farmers raising pheasants and quails.
