My choice for the most beautiful butterfly in Southern Asia is the Malay Lacewing (Cethosia biblis). A member of the Nymphalidae family with it’s origin thought to be in the Philippines, this lacewing prefers Passifloria species (passion flower) for feeding.
Seen here in the tropical garden of the Furama Resort, Danang Vietnam. At a distance I often mistake the dorsal view for the more common Indian Fritillary (Argyreus hyperbius).
The delicate ventral wing pattern is said to have been inspirational for the treasured batiks of village Malaysia….what do you think? The patterns of nature are often the sources of man’s best arts and crafts.
Nymphalidae are a huge family of butterflies, with over 5,000 speices including Emperors, Monarchs, Fritillaries and Admirals.
Also called “Brush Footed” due to dense tufts of scales on the legs of males, this family includes some of the world’s most spectacular butterflies.
