Plea for the Pyrenean stags

Plea for the Pyrenean stags

The largest and best reproductive males are systematically culled for their trophies even during the bellowing period. Result: these males are not seen any more and the younger ones hesitate to come down in the Pyrenean valleys to join the females; this is what’s left to admire… A sad situation.

As the wild boar, this species became nocturnal under hunting pressure. Deers come out only late in the evening, particularly in this region of Pyrenees where the large males carrying the most magnificent “trophies” are hunted down even during the squall period, from the 20th of sept. to the 10th of oct. more or less.

If you type deer, hunting, trophy, squall on the Net you will be horrified and you will even get the prices to kill a doe, a male deer or even the 2 together while the websites praise at length the beauty of the Pyrenean decor in which it is easy to massacre these animals without any discernment: the most appreciated are the males with the largest antlers and consequently are the best breeders.

I repeat myself but it is my own way of protesting against the practices of unscrupulous organizers exploiting this species ONLY to make money by death. The instinct to kill has become primitive nowadays… it is possible to interest people in wildlife photography or in the observations in the environment, even if it means building some chargeable huts or hides.

Roman circus games have been over for long … Just like bullfighting, taking anadrenalin shot can be done differently than by the killing… Some toreadors now get their thrills by jumping over the animal without killing it. The adrenalin will always be there if you exchange your rifle for a camera and the observation is more enriching than to press on a trigger and cut violently the life to such a beautiful animal. I would like to think that human beings will know how to evolve towards a more thoughtful and moderate management, driven not by the desire to kill but by the desire to control quotas wisely and with the respect due to the Living World.
