I photographed this little Cottontail Rabbit yesterday on Antelope Island State Park. Black-tailed Jackrabbits are far more common on the island so I was tickled to see this Cottontail near the hay barn. The Cottontail was nibbling on fresh grass shoots that were emerging from the straw near the barn. Mia

Calling male Long-billed Curlew
I haven’t heard the Long-billed Curlews (Numenius americanus) calling for several weeks here in northern Utah and I already miss hearing them. I photographed this calling male the second week of May out on a grassy flat on Antelope Island State Park. Long-billed Curlews are generally silent away from the breeding grounds, I never heard […]
Clearing Storm at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge
As many of my regular viewers know I love Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Montana. Just by being there I can feel my blood pressure drop, a sense of peace flows through my body and my mind (and camera) focuses on the wonders and intricacies of nature. This photo was taken at 5 […]
Bison on Antelope Island
With the rising temperatures of summer the Bison on Antelope Island need to find a reliable freshwater source. There are 40 freshwater springs that are located near the shoreline of the island and the Bison make use of them to quench their thirst. The Bison move down from the grassy slopes in large herds like […]
Burrowing Owls – They Make Me Smile
When I photograph Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) I can’t resist smiling, especially when they are juveniles. Just seeing them makes me grin. These chicks were perched on a Sagebrush not long after the sun had risen. They are fairly young but able to fly. The creamy colored chest lacks the spots of darker brown that […]
Birds of Antelope Island – A Mix of Feathered Friends
Yesterday I photographed a mixture of birds on Antelope Island State Park. There aren’t many places on this planet where a Chukar can be photographed walking on an Oolitic sand dune, I’m fortunate that I live where I can do that. The oolitic sand this Chukar is walking on was formed in the Great Salt […]
Western Grebe and chick
Just a short post today. I’ve been reading this morning about the fires in Colorado, a state that I loved living in, and I’m dreadfully sad about the destruction the Waldo Canyon Fire is leaving in its wake and the huge number of homes lost in the High Park Fire. My friend Bob Berwyn who […]
Rough-legged Hawk ~ Friday Photos
This Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) was photographed this past winter at Farmington Bay Wildlife Management Area in northern Utah. Rough-legged Hawks breed in the Arctic so we don’t see them around here in the summer. I didn’t notice until after I published “Birds of Antelope Island” yesterday that it was my 400th post on this […]
