Malaysia’s ‘mystery hybrid monkey’ is thought to be a rare combination of two distantly related monkeys

According to a researcher, the emergence of a “mystery monkey,” thought to be a rare combination of two distantly related monkeys, emphasizes the necessity of preserving habit connection.

The female monkey gained notoriety in 2017 when photos of it taken along the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysia, were shared on social media wildlife photography groups.

Researchers examined the monkey’s coloration and proportions in numerous images and decided that it is the offspring of a male proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) and a female silver langur (Trachypithecus cristatus).

They noticed that the monkey’s face resembled that of a proboscis monkey rather than a silver langur, however its nose was shorter and its skin was grey. Its long, dense hair resembled that of a silver langur, however it lacked the species’ usual side mane, and its color pattern was typical of a proboscis monkey.

Mixed-species groups had been sighted in the vicinity, and interspecific mating had been photographed, according to witnesses.
