The genus Apis is Latin for &#8220;bee&#8221;, and mellifera comes from Greek melli- &#8220;honey&#8221; and ferre &#8220;to bear&#8221; &#8211; hence the scientific name means &#8220;honey-bearing bee&#8221;.
