Ringed Kingfisher<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\nThe largest\u00a0<\/span>of the five species is<\/span><\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0Ringed Kingfisher<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nRinged Kingfisher<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nReaching almost 40cm it was the most\u00a0distinctive and common species we came across. It’s coloured blue-grey with a red-brown chest and easily seen along the river banks. They are f<\/span><\/em><\/span>ound <\/span>throughout\u00a0South and Central America\u00a0 as far south as\u00a0Tierra del Fuego and\u00a0 has now\u00a0<\/span>increased<\/em><\/span>\u00a0its range north to the Rio Grande in Texas.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nAmazon Kingfisher<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\nThe second largest of the five species is<\/span><\/em>\u00a0the Amazon Kingfisher measuring about 30 cm in\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span>length.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/a>Male Amazon Kingfisher<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIts’ upper parts are oily green colour with a distinctive ragged crest and a white collar. Like the ringed Kingfisher the Amazon is found around lakes and slow flowing rivers from Mexico, to central Argentina<\/em><\/span><\/p>\nGreen-and-rufous Kingfisher<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\nThe Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is arguably the most attractive and one of the less common species we came across<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/a>

Green-and-rufous Kingfisher<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIt is 24\u00a0cm in length, so not the smallest, but very difficult to spot. This is due to its’ dark\u00a0glossy green upper parts, with white <\/span>spotting on the wings, and a rufous nape. These all act as excellent camouflage.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\nLike the other kingfishers it’s found around streams and rivers. It’s distribution is from Nicaragua, through Central America and across much of the northern parts of South America, as far as Paraguay.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\n

Measuring about 19\u00a0centimeters in length, it looks like a smaller version of the Amazon kingfisher. It has dark green\u00a0upper parts,\u00a0 a white collar and a rufous\u00a0breast\u00a0<\/span>band, Although the\u00a0 females lack the breast colouring.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\nLike all the other kingfishers they’re always found near water. However being smaller they seem to favour the smaller streams and around the edges of ponds. Here the dense low foliage provided perches close to the water.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\nAmerican Pygmy Kingfisher<\/span><\/h1>\nThe smallest of the Pantanals Kingfishers is\u00a0 the American Pygmy Kingfisher.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/a>
