So California rescuers step in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A resident found a baby mountain lion all alone in California \u2014 and even wildlife officials couldn\u2019t find its mom<\/p>\n<p>. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife set up wildlife surveillance cameras and also searched on foot hoping to find the tiny cub\u2019s mom, \u201cbut sadly no mountain lions were detected in the area for several days,\u201d the Oakland Zoo said in a Facebook post Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p>So department personnel brought the 4-week-old cub to the Oakland Zoo for care, the zoo said.<\/p>\n<p>While officials didn\u2019t say how the cub may have ended up orphaned in El Dorado County, mountain lion moms are often killed by cars in the area, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a mother mountain lion is killed in a car strike, it is likely her cubs will not survive because they rely on her for food and guidance,\u201d the zoo said on its website. A beloved mountain lion was killed crossing a Southern California highway in January \u2014 not far from where one of her cubs had also died, McClatchy News previously reported.<\/p>\n<p>Video shows the little blue-eyed cub curiously looking around during a veterinary examination, wrapped in a light blue blanket that matches its eyes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FOakZoo%2Fvideos%2F407760408436754%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"429\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, the cub shows no signs of major health problems,\u201d zoo officials said. \u201cHis care team has named him Briar, inspired by the spots on his fur resembling a blackberry bush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mountain lion cubs are born with spots to help them blend in with their surroundings while they\u2019re young and vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will take care of little Briar until a forever home for him can be found,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s the 27th rescued mountain lion staff has cared for at the zoo through its Bay Area Cougar Action Team and one of the youngest, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Several people thanked the resident who found the cub and said in the comments they hoped Briar\u2019s mom was OK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so sad they can\u2019t find Mom,\u201d someone said. \u201cKnow you will be loved very much from here on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so sorry this little guy needed rescue, but I\u2019m looking forward to watching him grow and thrive!\u201d another person said.<\/p>\n<p><em>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/california\/article290871199.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">article<\/a> by Brooke Baitinger was first published by The Sacramento Bee on 8 August 2024.
