{"id":2178268,"date":"2024-11-02T18:00:34","date_gmt":"2024-11-02T17:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/?p=2178268"},"modified":"2024-11-01T09:27:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T08:27:46","slug":"rodents-may-use-sound-to-enhance-their-sense-of-smell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/rodents-may-use-sound-to-enhance-their-sense-of-smell\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodents May Use Sound to Enhance Their Sense of Smell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent research suggests that rats and mice might be fine-tuning their already impressive sense of smell through sounds that humans can\u2019t detect.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe that these rodents could be using ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) to influence their olfactory abilities in ways previously unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Eduardo Mercado III, one of the researchers behind the study published in Neuroscience &amp; Biobehavioral Reviews, describes the discovery as almost magical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so far off the scale of what we know that it\u2019s like we\u2019re observing \u2018Jedi\u2019 rats,\u201d he said, referencing the heightened awareness of the famous Star Wars characters.<\/p>\n<p>Mercado and his team propose that USVs\u2014sounds too high-pitched for humans to hear\u2014may help rodents enhance their sense of smell by interacting with inhaled odorants.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mercado, these sounds may cluster odor particles, improving how well rodents detect pheromones and other scents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis phenomenon has never been observed before, or I believe even suspected, in any animal,\u201d Mercado explained.<\/p>\n<p>He believes the rodents are essentially creating new information pathways by altering their environment and controlling the molecular particles they encounter through sound.<\/p>\n<p>Mercado\u2019s journey to uncovering this unique behavior began with his study of humpback whale songs.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until later that he noticed unusual vocal patterns in rodents, which led to this groundbreaking discovery.<\/p>\n<p>The implications of this study go beyond understanding rodent behavior.
