{"id":2180846,"date":"2024-12-03T18:00:30","date_gmt":"2024-12-03T17:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/?p=2180846"},"modified":"2024-11-29T14:28:11","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T13:28:11","slug":"emperor-penguin-returns-to-the-ocean-after-amazing-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/emperor-penguin-returns-to-the-ocean-after-amazing-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"Emperor Penguin Returns to the Ocean After Amazing Journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An emperor penguin named Gus made an extraordinary appearance on an Australian beach, thousands of miles away from his icy Antarctic habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Officials confirmed that Gus was released back into the ocean after 20 days of recovery, marking the end of his remarkable journey.<\/p>\n<p>Gus was discovered on November 1 in Denmark, a coastal town in southwestern Australia, far from the frigid waters emperor penguins typically inhabit.<\/p>\n<p>Wildlife caregiver Carol Biddulph, who looked after Gus during his rehabilitation, shared that his condition was critical when he was found, as he was severely undernourished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really didn\u2019t know whether he was going to make it to begin with because he was so undernourished,\u201d Biddulph admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Despite initial concerns, Gus gained strength under her care, increasing his weight from 47 to 54 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Mirrors played a unique role in his recovery, providing Gus with a sense of companionship that social creatures like emperor penguins crave.<\/p>\n<p>Once healthy enough to return to the wild, Gus was transported by boat from Albany, Australia\u2019s southernmost city, to the Southern Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Officials emphasized the urgency of his release, noting the onset of summer and the importance of his ability to thermoregulate in colder waters.<\/p>\n<p>University of Western Australia research fellow Belinda Cannell highlighted that while emperor penguins occasionally make it to New Zealand, Gus\u2019s arrival in Australia was unprecedented.<\/p>\n<p><i>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/animals\/emperor-penguin-returns-to-the-ocean-after-amazing-journey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">article<\/a> by Trinity Sparke\u00a0 was first published by One Green Planet on 26 November 2024.
