{"id":2185948,"date":"2025-02-28T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T05:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/?p=2185948"},"modified":"2025-02-23T12:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-02-23T11:54:09","slug":"protected-areas-help-mexican-spotted-owls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/protected-areas-help-mexican-spotted-owls\/","title":{"rendered":"Protected areas help Mexican spotted owls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Designated protected areas are likely helping a spotted owl subspecies persist in the southwestern U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The Mexican spotted owl (Strix occidentalis lucida), which lives in Mexico and the southwestern U.S., is listed as threatened in both countries.<\/p>\n<p>The spotted owl subspecies faces threats of logging, habitat loss and increasing wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Biologists use Protected Activity Centers\u2014or PACs\u2014to protect habitat in owls\u2019 territories.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in the Journal of Raptor Research, researchers tagged the birds with GPS units to determine how they were using PACs in Arizona and New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The team found that Mexican spotted owls extensively use the protected areas for roosting, foraging and nesting.<\/p>\n<p>But the researchers stress that while PACs seem to benefit the owls, forest management needs to continue to be adaptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research is just a tiny fraction of a collaborative process between governmental, Tribal, NGO and other institutions all working towards the conservation and preservation of this species,\u201d said lead author Dana Reid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwls use all sorts of areas, on both public and private lands.
