According to a recent article by Marilyn Perkins for Live Science, some parrots use words in context—and sometimes with surprising accuracy.

In the wild, parrots communicate through signature calls, a bit like names. But in captivity, they often bond with their human “flock” and begin to speak our language instead. Irene Pepperberg, a Boston University researcher, worked with Alex the African grey parrot, who learned over 100 words, understood colors and numbers, and even grasped comparisons like “bigger” and “same.” His speech wasn’t just mimicry—it was grounded in real understanding.

Erin Colbert-White, a psychologist at the University of Puget Sound, adds that parrots can learn real-world object labels like “peanut.” If they ask for one and are given a different food, they’ll often reject it—proving they know what they want and what the word means.

Parrots also pick up on social cues. One of the most fascinating examples is Alex learning to say “I’m sorry” after upsetting his trainer. He wasn’t showing remorse, but he clearly learned the phrase helped ease tension. Similarly, parrots may say “I love you” not from emotional depth, but because it earns them attention, affection, and treats.

This challenges us to rethink how we view animal intelligence. As Pepperberg puts it, perhaps it’s time we try to understand their languages, not just teach them ours.

Parrots deserve more than a cage and a laugh track. Let’s treat these brilliant beings with the respect they’ve earned—by protecting wild habitats and ending the pet trade that sees them as novelties, not individuals.

This article by Nicholas Vincent was first published by One Green Planet on 30 May 2025.Lead Image: Image Credit :acceptphoto/Shutterstock.

Wildlife in catastrophic decline

The 73% decline in vertebrate wildlife populations during the last 50 years (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish), is primarily driven by human activities that threaten biodiversity.

Habitat Loss and Degradation – human activities like deforestation, urbanization, and agriculture have led to the destruction and fragmentation of natural habitats, reducing the space and resources available for wildlife.

Pollution – air, water, and soil pollution from industrial activities, agriculture, and other sources can harm wildlife directly or indirectly by affecting their habitats and food sources.

Climate Change – changing weather patterns, rising temperatures, and sea levels are disrupting ecosystems and impacting species’ ability to adapt and survive.

Overexploitation of Resources – unsustainable hunting, fishing, and logging practices can lead to the depletion of populations and the loss of biodiversity.

Invasive Species – the introduction of non-native species can disrupt ecosystems, compete with native species, and threaten their survival.

Donate

Help to protect wildlife by donating as little as $5.
