An oarfish, fantastically long and rarely seen, had washed up on Tasmania\u2019s rugged west coast.<\/p>\n<p>Oarfish, one of the ocean\u2019s longest fish, are astonishing creatures that grow up to eight metres long. Nicknamed the \u201cking of herrings\u201d or more unkindly the \u201cdoomsday fish\u201d, some legends and stories consider the animals to be harbingers of disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Sybil Robertson made the unusual discovery while walking on Ocean Beach near Strahan, on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I go out there, I\u2019m the only person on the beach,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really wild. There\u2019s nothing between here and Argentina.\u201d On Monday, she walked in a different direction than usual and noticed a group of sea eagles inspecting the fish, which she estimated was around three metres long, on the sand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m five foot nine, and I\u2019ve got a reasonable stride, [it was] a good three-and-a-bit paces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"thumbnail Photograph: Sybil Robertson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was fantastic,\u201d she said, although not realising what it was. \u201cI just knew it was something unusual and weird.\u201d But her find was quickly identified as an oarfish when she posted a photo on the Citizen Scientists of Tasmania social media page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts exceptionally unusual to see anything like that,\u201d said assoc prof Neville Barrett, a marine ecologist at the University of Tasmania. Oarfish are an \u201cepipelagic\u201d species, he said, living in the open ocean at mid-water depths of 150 to 500m, from where they are rarely seen or caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just not out there,\u201d Barrett said. \u201cWe\u2019re not looking, we\u2019re not diving, we\u2019re not even fishing in that part of the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oarfish are \u201ca phenomenally big fish\u201d he said, which can weigh more than 400kg. He described them as a lazy fish with very little muscle that tends to float around, often vertically in the water, eating various types of plankton.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption So they don\u2019t have to be very strong, or great swimmers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Very few people have seen an oarfish in the wild. Marine biologist Jorja Gilmore is \u201cone of the lucky ones\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, she was leading a small tour group of snorkellers on the Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas when they spotted something strange in the water below them.<\/p>\n<p>This one was a juvenile, long and thin like a ruler, with tendrils that made it look a bit like a giant lure, Gilmore said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Rare juvenile 'doomsday' oarfish seen on the Great Barrier Reef\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M7evuFbsh7E\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so bizarre\u201d, she said, \u201clike something from the deep sea\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The incredibly rare encounter, captured on camera by Gilmore\u2019s colleague Tahn Miller, is thought to be the first recorded with this species on the east coast of Australia. \u201cIt\u2019s still the best thing I have seen in the water to this day,\u201d Gilmore said.<\/p>\n<p>Robertson feels fortunate to have come across the fish in such good condition. A few hours later the head was gone, and the body was already decimated by crows and eagles, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so interesting what you can find if you just keep your eyes open whilst you\u2019re looking around.
