Pakistan is taking action after a shocking incident in Lahore exposed the country\u2019s growing and troubling trade in exotic pets. According to DW News (via Reuters), authorities in Punjab province have seized 18 lions that were being illegally kept as pets. This follows a frightening episode in which a lion escaped from a residential home and attacked a woman and two children.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries. But the event sparked a swift response from the provincial Wildlife and Parks Department, which raided 38 lion and tiger breeding sites across Punjab. At least eight people were arrested for breaking animal welfare and licensing laws.<\/p>\n
Officials estimate there are over 500 big cats in private hands in Punjab alone, often kept as status symbols by the wealthy elite. Mubeen Elahi, director general of the Wildlife and Parks Department, confirmed that all such sites will be inspected by the end of the week. Owning a big cat without a license in Pakistan can result in up to seven years in jail.<\/p>\n
The lion involved in the attack has since been relocated to a safari park. But the incident raises deeper questions about the ethics of keeping wild animals in captivity for prestige or entertainment. Exotic animals suffer immensely in domestic environments\u2014kept far from their natural habitats, deprived of proper care, and often subjected to harsh treatment.<\/p>\n
