{"id":2189064,"date":"2025-11-11T12:00:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T11:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/?p=2189064"},"modified":"2025-11-08T10:56:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T09:56:31","slug":"dolphin-seen-near-st-marks-square-inspires-venetian-rescue-effort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/dolphin-seen-near-st-marks-square-inspires-venetian-rescue-effort\/","title":{"rendered":"Dolphin seen near St Mark\u2019s Square inspires Venetian rescue effort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Activists in Venice are campaigning to save a dolphin spotted in the lagoon over fears growing tourist interest could put its life at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Known as Mimmo, the bottlenose dolphin made its latest appearance in St Mark\u2019s basin, the body of water in front of the square of the same name, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The dolphin has been entertaining tourists and residents with its acrobatic leaps, but animal and environmental activists fear it could be killed by the propellers of boats that crisscross the busy lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>Mimmo was first seen by Manuel Tiffi, a water-taxi driver, on 23 June. He told Corriere della Sera in October that the dolphin often swam \u201cright in front of the bow\u201d. Tiffi said taxi drivers reported sightings in order to warn people to be careful. \u201cBut the animal seems to have no fear,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2189064-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/uploads.guim.co.uk\/2025\/11\/06\/251106dolphin.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/uploads.guim.co.uk\/2025\/11\/06\/251106dolphin.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">https:\/\/uploads.guim.co.uk\/2025\/11\/06\/251106dolphin.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Others, however, have been less cautious, with some allegedly throwing balls at Mimmo or chasing the animal in their boats. Selfie tours have also been organised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis animal is not a tourist attraction, it is a wild animal that needs to be brought to a healthier environment,\u201d said Cristina Romieri, who began the \u2018Save the dolphin\u2019 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Romieri says that while a dolphin can survive in the lagoon, St Mark\u2019s basin is another matter because it is where \u201cwater taxis, steamers and everything else pass\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Experts at Cert, an emergency response team for stranded marine animals affiliated with the University of Padova, and coastguard personnel have been monitoring the dolphin and are trying to help it return to the open sea. Photograph: Cert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bottlenoses are the most common species of dolphin in Italian waters and although they usually move around in pods, in recent years there have been several cases of solitary dolphins in the Adriatic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are the classic dolphins that follow fishermen in the northern Adriatic,\u201d said Guido Pietroluongo, a researcher at Cert. \u201cIt is likely that these animals, following their prey, detach themselves from the group and find themselves in environments where there is the presence of human activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe parameters of the lagoon are very similar to those of the sea, in addition to the fact that the lagoon is full of fish. So this animal is in the lagoon because it eats, otherwise it would have died after a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pietroluongo said it was normal for dolphins to wander around and from what the experts have understood about Mimmo so far, the animal is a skilful navigator. \u201cThe important thing is not to disturb it,\u201d he added. \u201cIf you see a lion in the middle of St Mark\u2019s Square, nobody would ever dream of going up to it and giving it a hug.
