In a massive victory for animal rights, the Miami Seaquarium has closed its doors for good!<\/p>\n
The “marine theme park,” which operated for 70 years, spent decades profiting off of the misery of captive animals.<\/p>\n

Miami Seaquarium made its money by imprisoning hundreds of animals, including many innocent, beautiful orcas. And — completely unsurprising to those of us who know about the impacts of captivity on wild animals — those orcas suffered tremendously.<\/p>\n
The park’s first orca, named Hugo, literally died of a brain aneurysm after years of banging his head against the walls of the tank and injuring himself. Hugo’s companion, Lolita, was trapped in a shallow pool for more than fifty years, most of them spent without the company of another orca. Lolita died tragically before she could move to a natural sea pen.<\/p>\n
There are too many stories of marine mammals suffering in captivity to list here. In the year 2025, we must defer to the history and research: orcas and other marine animals in captivity wallow in misery, die tragically, and are not allowed to fulfill their natural behaviors.<\/p>\n
The closing of Miami Seaquarium is a huge victory, and now it’s time we set our eyes on the next goal: closing SeaWorld for good, too.<\/p>\n
The science is clear: marine animals aren’t meant to be trapped in tiny cages, they’re meant to be in the wild or in sanctuaries. We can’t let SeaWorld continue profiting off of the suffering of these beautiful creatures! It’s time for SeaWorld to close its locations and move all animals to sanctuaries permanently!
