{"id":2189770,"date":"2026-01-24T06:00:41","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T05:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/?p=2189770"},"modified":"2025-12-18T14:52:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T13:52:21","slug":"not-expected-at-all-dolphin-researchers-just-made-a-surprising-discovery-in-the-mediterranean-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/not-expected-at-all-dolphin-researchers-just-made-a-surprising-discovery-in-the-mediterranean-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cNot expected at all\u201d: dolphin researchers just made a surprising discovery in the Mediterranean Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study challenges a long-held theory about bottlenose dolphins in the Mediterranean, revealing that they are divided by offshore and coastal ecotypes rather than being split into east and west populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought that there was a general east-west split in their populations based on quite old genetic techniques that wouldn&#8217;t be used nowadays,\u201d says lead author Daniel Moore, a marine biologist at the University of Exeter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started the study wanting to understand that east-west split a bit more, but using modern techniques, and what we found was just not expected at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t just about points on a map. \u201cThe dolphin populations can be split into two different ecotypes: offshore and coastal, just like we find in orca,\u201d says Moore. The two types have different genetics, &#8216;languages&#8217; and social structures. Credit: Tilen Genov<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Surprisingly, explains Moore, the dolphins found in Sicily are in the same offshore group as those far away in the Azores. Credit: Emily Cunningham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another twist in the tale is that the researchers were only sampling dolphins in the Azores as an outlier group. \u201cThis was going to confirm that our Mediterranean dolphins were separate,\u201d says Moore. \u201cThere was no expectation at all that, actually, some of them could be the same population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the choice of this location is \u201cgame changing,\u201d he says, because without samples from the Azores, \u201cI don&#8217;t think we would have discovered this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bottlenose dolphins are a protected species in the Mediterranean. Knowing that there are two different ecotypes gives us an insight into the different threats they might face in their offshore or coastal habitats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the population structure of protected species and how that relates to their abundance and threats, such as bycatch, may help assess the risk of extinction of certain populations,\u201d says Dr Tilen Genov, assistant professor at the University of Primorska and founder of Morigenos \u2013 Slovenian Marine Mammal Society.
