When a kangaroo went bounding through the streets of Waco, Texas, on a Monday morning in March 2026, local police officers had quite a surprise waiting for them.<\/p>\n
According to the Waco Police Department, officers received a call just after 10 a.m., tracked the animal down, and safely secured it by the tail before returning it to a nearby wildlife rescue.<\/p>\n

This was far from an isolated incident. Just weeks before the Waco sighting, a Texas woman captured footage of a kangaroo hopping along an Interstate 20 service road near Gordon, a small town west of Dallas.<\/p>\n
Her video racked up more than 20,000 likes on TikTok and sparked a flood of comments from people wondering whether a wild kangaroo population had somehow taken root in the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n
Rebecca Hamlin, president of the North Texas Wildlife Center, was quick to clarify that kangaroos absolutely do not roam free in Texas.<\/p>\n
Every one of these sightings points back to the same uncomfortable truth: exotic animals are escaping or being abandoned by private owners, and they have nowhere natural to go.<\/p>\n
Kangaroos are marsupials, a group of roughly 70 species found primarily in Central and South America, with the Virginia opossum standing as the only marsupial native to North America.<\/p>\n
These creatures raise their young in pouches for extended periods, and they have highly specific social, dietary, and environmental needs. A Texas backyard simply cannot provide what they require to thrive.<\/p>\n
The North Texas Wildlife Center regularly receives surrendered and abandoned exotic animals ranging from monkeys and tortoises to peacocks and bearded dragons.<\/p>\n
Texas does require permits and registration certificates for certain exotic animals, but enforcement gaps mean that many wildlife rescues are quietly absorbing the consequences.<\/p>\n
