{"id":2206821,"date":"2026-08-28T06:00:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T05:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/?p=2206821"},"modified":"2026-08-23T09:21:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T08:21:15","slug":"spectacular-whale-feeding-frenzies-are-suddenly-being-seen-along-the-coast-of-east-greenland-and-scientists-know-why","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusingonwildlife.com\/news\/spectacular-whale-feeding-frenzies-are-suddenly-being-seen-along-the-coast-of-east-greenland-and-scientists-know-why\/","title":{"rendered":"Spectacular whale &#8216;feeding frenzies&#8217; are suddenly being seen along the coast of East Greenland \u2013 and scientists know why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a new study of large whales in East Greenland, researchers have documented a dramatic biodiversity shift: minke whales, fin whales and humpback whales, once rarely seen in these waters, have now become abundant.<\/p>\n<p>The research, conducted by Mads Peter Heide-J\u00f8rgensen\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0Greenland Institute of Natural Resources\u00a0and colleagues in\u00a0Greenland, Denmark and Iceland, presents a striking example of how biodiversity can change as\u00a0sea temperatures increase and sea ice dwindles.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the study, published in\u00a0<em>Frontiers in Marine Science<\/em>, researchers compared numbers of whales from 1987 to 2025 using observations from sea and air, tagging data and information from Inuit hunters.<\/p>\n<p>The team developed a mathematical model to find patterns in the data sets and highlighted exceptionally high densities of whales, including spectacular aggregations of between 20 and 50 humpbacks in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024 alone,\u00a0at least 4,000\u00a0humpback whales, 6,000\u00a0fin whales and 6,000 minke whales visited the Greenland Sea, reports the study.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video src=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/resources\/content\/f347d34d-c1a6-4a00-b570-b78c2dcb3211\/e072ba7a-f0f9-468b-a793-e10e289a764f\/05b1e6a5-3cb2-4ac1-be2f-7665ee01e7aa\/Greenland-baleen-whales-video.mp4?preview=false&amp;platform=WEB&amp;deviceId=c4e2ee80-2506-4ec5-a649-bb0a5be1b22c\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2026\/08\/Greenland-baleen-whales-video-scaled.jpg\" preload=\"none\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Over the past two decades, changes in sea temperature and sea-ice conditions have driven profound ecological shifts along the coast of East Greenland, including the widespread occurrence of baleen whale species.
