As humans, we need and depend on the environment we live in. Therefore, we do all share a part in our ecosystem. By learning about Asian elephant facts, you will understand how Asian elephants contribute to the environment.

Elephants have a role for spreading seeds in their habitats so that various plants will develop. For instance, Asian elephant habitats include some parts of monsoon forests and grasslands in Asia.

Elephants Impact Ecosystem Structure and Health

Through learning about Asian elephants we can gain better knowledge of nature and it will provide motivation to protect elephants and their land.

Elephants roam wide distances making them an “umbrella species.” Protecting their habitat can also mean a place for refuge and resources to many other flora and fauna. Their interactions with vegetation, movement and feeding can impact ecosystem structure and health.

Conservation efforts should be expanded and elephant conservation is only one of the ecological benefits.

The Elephant Population is Declining

It is estimated that Asian elephants are presently Endangered (c. 40,000-50,000 in wild populations in 13 countries). Habitat loss is a major problem, as forest fragmentation with roads, settlements and plantations prevents elephants from their normal movements.

Human-Elephant Conflict

If elephants lose access to natural food sources and migration, they might venture into farms or villages to seek for food. This may lead to loss of crops, property, injuries and death of man and elephant. Buffer zones, early warning systems and community-based initiatives can be effective conservation strategies to mitigate these conflicts.

Conserving Elephants is Protecting People Too

Conservation must not be limited to animals. Coexistence solutions are needed that are practical and sustainable for local communities that live side by side with elephants and that ensure the survival and success of both.

Coexistence is possible through supporting farmers, better land-use planning, protecting wildlife corridors, and creating and implementing effective conflict-prevention measures.

Conservation also involves questioning elephant-trading. There is a need for responsible tourism if activities such as elephant rides and close contact with tourists are linked with the use of elephant training practices that are harmful and captivity.

Everyone Has a Role in Conservation

While governments, charities or wildlife organisations are responsible for elephant conservation, individuals can too! Let’s all do our part for credible conservation programmes, ethical wildlife experiences, decreased demand for illegal wildlife products and sharing reliable information.

In the end, elephant protection is also Biodiversity protection, ecosystem protection, and natural balance protection which is essential for life.
