John James Audubon, Plate 56 – American Bison<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n

A rare collection of 82 original, hand-colored engravings of birds and quadrupeds by John James Audubon will come under the hammer in New York on 5th December 2012. “The Birds of America” was published in London between 1827 and 1838 by Robert Havell.<\/p>\n

Although some items will be purchased by art galleries for public display, most of the items will probably be purchased by private collectors. This may be a once in a lifetime to view such a large collection of original, works of “wildlife” art in one place.<\/p>\n

John James Audubon, Plate 56: American Bison [Male] – from Audubon’s Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Hand colored lithographs. Imperial Folio. Published in Philadelphia between 1839 and 1844 by J.T. Bowen. Originally issued in 30 parts, 5 plates per part, in collaboration with his sons, Victor Gifford and John Woodhouse Audubon. Framed. Approximately 27″ x 21″ with full margins. RESERVE (Lot 60)<\/p>\n
