Mustela putorius putorius – Rare pictures of this forest creature with wet hair from all the rain we had these last weeks. Mustelidae close to the weasel, mink, otter and hermine. Its domestic counterpart is the ferret (Mustela putorius furo).<\/p>\n

Short-legged, this animal measures from 35 to 37 cms long without the tail and weighs less than 1 kg for the female and approximately 1,7 kg for the male; in case of fear or threat, two glands near its tail release a terrible stench.<\/p>\n

As with other mammals, this smell is also left on strategic places to communicate and mark a territory. It is a carnivore and eats mainly rodents and birds but also frogs and snakes. It is declining in Europe but is very present in the south-west of France.<\/p>\n

Le Putois d’Europe -Must\u00e9lid\u00e9 voisin de la belette, du vison, de la loutre et de l’hermine; sa forme domestique est le furet (Mustela putorius furo). Court sur pattes, cet animal mesure de 35 \u00e0 37 cmde long sans la queue et p\u00e8se moins d’1 kg pour la femelle et 1,7kg environ pour le m\u00e2le. En cas de peur ou de menace, deux glandes situ\u00e9es pr\u00e8s de sa queue lib\u00e8rent une terrible puanteur. Comme chez d’autres mammif\u00e8res, cette empreinte odorif\u00e9rante est \u00e9galement laiss\u00e9e sur des endroits strat\u00e9giques pour communiquer et marquer un territoire.<\/p>\n

Plut\u00f4t nocturne, il est furtif et discret et se rencontre en for\u00eat mais surtout dans les lieux humides: bordure d\u2019\u00e9tangs et marais; il chasse de pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence la nuit. Le terrier est souvent creus\u00e9 sous les racines des arbres, dans un mur ou dans un ancien terrier de blaireau ou de renard. Il peut vivre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 5 ou 6 ans dans la nature, mais bien plus en captivit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

C’est un carnivore redoutable qui s’attaque principalement aux lapins, aux petits rongeurs, \u00e0 toutes esp\u00e8ces d’oiseaux, aussi aux rats musqu\u00e9s qui n’ont presque pas de pr\u00e9dateurs naturels ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 introduits artificiellement. Mais il mange volontiers aussi des poissons, grenouilles et serpents. S’il se rar\u00e9fie ailleurs en Europe, il est tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9sent dans le sud-ouest de la France…<\/p>\n
