They can deliver venom into the wound&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<article id=\"sprylab_purple_content\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"purple-inner-container purple-content-body-inner\">\n<p>In a new study, researchers compared the features of 30 different stingray spines to find out why some break off while others remain sturdy<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have gained a fascinating insight into how\u00a0<strong>stingrays<\/strong>\u2019 iconic spines differ across species and the trade-off between different features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStingray spines are highly modified scales,\u201d says Emily Poulin, a PhD candidate at\u00a0UC Irvine.<\/p>\n<p>Found on the tail of the stingray, these spines are used for protection when the ray feels under threat. \u201cWhen they use these spines, they puncture them really deeply into their attacker,\u201d she says. \u201cThey can deliver venom into the wound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People often assume that stingrays might attack humans with their\u00a0venomous tail barb but they are purely for self-defence. \u201cThey use their spines as a last resort to protect themselves,\u201d says Poulin. \u201cUsually, they would rather make an escape, if possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because the rays wield these weapons when being attacked, it\u2019s vital that they work. \u201cIt&#8217;s life or death if these tools are effective,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Poulin and colleagues had noticed that some stingrays have spines that seem to have evolved to break off \u2013 \u201cyou&#8217;ll see them wedged in the skeleton of certain sharks or large predatory fishes,\u201d she says \u2013 while others have more durable barbs that stay intact.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study, published in\u00a0Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, they explored how different features affect performance across 30 different species of stingray.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, they gathered a collection of different spines from various species. \u201cIt&#8217;s hard to observe them actually striking,\u201d says Poulin, so the team tracked down specimens from museum collections around the world and used micro-computed tomography\u00a0(micro-CT) scanning to get a high-resolution picture of their key features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur idea was to break down the spines into their mechanical components,\u201d she says. \u201cWe measured properties of the spines that we thought would be important for their defensive function, and\u2026 we basically plotted all of the functional traits that we saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2026\/06\/stingray-footage.mp4\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-30-at-17.10.17.png\" preload=\"none\" controls=\"controls\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Getty<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies into how biological weapons such as stingray spines work test the strike at very slow speeds so they could take very precise measurements, Poulin says. They took a different approach because \u201cpredator-prey interactions don&#8217;t actually happen at those slow speeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, they wanted to recreate the strike as it would happen in nature, based on the speed reported in another study. \u201cIf you yank it out slowly, that&#8217;s not completely representative of what that interaction would look like in real life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>To test the spines\u2019 ability to puncture a surface, they dropped them from half a metre (53cm) high. Then, they had to find a way to test how easily the spine could be dislodged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were tinkering, and we had to get creative,\u201d says Poulin. \u201cBasically, I made a giant pendulum.\u201d As the pendulum accelerates, it \u201cyanks the spine out,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than replicate the species\u2019 spines directly, they created models exploring how things like how angles, sharpness and serration impacted the spines\u2019 function. \u201cWe wanted to get at what is the main force driving the trade off in spine function,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>By doing this, the researchers started to see a pattern. \u201cA lot of the stingrays have these really long narrow spines that break more easily, while others have shorter, sturdier spines that seem more like a slicing tool,\u201d says Poulin.<\/p>\n<p>Although stingrays can regrow their spines \u2013 in a similar way that some lizards can lose their tail and grow another \u2013 losing their defensive barb is costly. \u201cYou&#8217;ll have a period where you don&#8217;t have a fully mature spine to protect yourself with,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>This means that there\u2019s a trade-off to be made: \u201cthe cost of surviving that interaction versus protecting yourself in the future,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>The study showed that stingrays with long, slender spines were ideal for creating a deep puncture wound but were more likely to break off while some species (particularly freshwater stingrays) had much sturdier stingers. \u201cThey could probably use those spines for multiple defensive interactions,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The difference could be to do with the animals\u2019 habitat. \u201cStingrays who are in more exposed and sandy habitats, maybe it would be better for them to sacrifice their spine,\u201d she says, \u201cbut it could cause more pain to the predator if it breaks off inside of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0freshwater stingrays\u00a0likely have more places they can hide when they get away so they could benefit from hanging onto their weapon in case of another encounter.<\/p>\n<p>Poulin still has more questions she wants answered about stingray\u2019s self-defence.
