A trail camera captured a young northern hairy-nosed wombat in Queensland

At the Richard Underwood Nature Refuge in the Australian state of Queensland, a surveillance camera recorded a young northern hairy-nosed wombat. This species is considered one of the rarest mammals on the planet and is listed as Critically Endangered. For the conservation community, such footage was a significant milestone that confirms the viability of a small, fragile population.

The appearance of a young animal in the trail camera’s lens means that the species continues to breed within the protected area, and therefore the many years of efforts to save it are delivering measurable results.

A find hidden in 100 hours of footage

Senior Field Ecologist at the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) Andy Howe discovered the rare animal after methodically reviewing around 100 hours of trail-camera footage. In the frames, the young wombat moves unhurriedly across the protected area, sniffing the ground and digging in the soil in search of food.

For specialists accustomed to rewatching hundreds of hours of monotonous recordings, such a moment is like finding a fleck of gold in a prospector’s pan. The cameras are installed precisely to capture such episodes; however, the chance of capturing on camera a member of such a small population remains low.

Such finds have become possible thanks to modern video surveillance technologies. For this, cameras with resolutions ranging from Full HD to 8K are used, which provide a sharp image. Video can be streamed live to multiple devices at once. Cameras can also be used for other observations—for example, underwater filming or tracking volcanic activity.

A young animal as a sign of successful breeding

The key significance of the footage lies not simply in the fact that a wombat appeared in front of the camera, but in the animal’s age. A young animal indicates that adults are successfully raising offspring within a fenced area, where predators and competitors do not threaten them.

“It’s very encouraging to know that one of the rarest animals in the world is doing well and breeding safely within the fenced area. Although this is not the first joey born in the refuge, it is the first juvenile spotted in the past few years,” Andy Howe noted in an official AWC statement.

Just 400 individuals left worldwide

According to AWC, about 400 northern hairy-nosed wombats remain on Earth. The situation was even more dramatic around the turn of the 21st century, when one of Queensland’s reserves had only about 35 individuals. Among the main reasons for the catastrophic decline in the population, specialists cite:

  • the impacts of land development by European settlers, which destroyed the species’ habitat;
  • competition from introduced livestock, which displaced wombats from their feeding grounds.

Targeted conservation measures have made it possible to gradually increase numbers; however, the species still teeters on the brink.

An unexpected encounter with an echidna was caught on video

A month later, the cameras again recorded the young wombat, but this time the footage brought a surprise. An echidna appeared in the frame and tried to approach the wombat. It reacted nervously: it started flinging dirt with its paws, hopping and twitching, clearly trying to increase the distance from its spiky neighbor. AWC published the clip on its Instagram account, where it quickly attracted attention.

“A nervous wombat and a content echidna,” Tim Flannery of the Australian Museum commented on the episode in an interview with New Scientist, adding that he had never before observed such encounters between these two species.

A$384,000 grant and an 18-month plan

A grant of A$384,000 (about US$265,000) has been allocated to continue the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat Recovery Action Plan, to be distributed over the next 18 months. The planned measures include:

  • improving the wombats’ food supply;
  • controlling the spread of invasive weeds;
  • developing and implementing a fire management strategy in the refuge.

Fresh trail-camera footage confirms the effectiveness of the fenced-reserve model and gives scientists additional material for monitoring the population. Work to restore the northern hairy-nosed wombat will continue under the funded program, and each new recording of a young animal becomes a small but meaningful piece of evidence that the species can still be saved.
