Last Thursday afternoon, visiting Norwegian birder, Ellen Askum and I made it out to the area around the Marriott hotel, Mirbat. A few kilometres east down the coast is Ras Janjari which is one of the best places to seawatch from the mainland. After visiting there we explored the area close to the hotel where […]

Ticotico grande (Buff-fronted foliage-gleaner) Philydor rufum
First year Citrine Wagtail a new Saudi Arabia ringing species – Sabkhat Al Fasl
Whilst ringing at Sabkhat Al Fasl on 10 October 2015 we caught a first year Citrine Wagtail. This was the first time we have caught and ringed this species in Saudi Arabia and was a bit of a surprise as we seldom catch any wagtails as they are so good at seeing and avoiding the […]
Varillero congo (Chestnut-capped Blackbird) Agelaius ruficapillus
A good ringing session – Sabkhat Al Fasl
Whilst ringing at Sabkhat Al Fasl on 9 October 2015 we caught 44 birds which is the highest number we have caught in a single day. We set nine 18 metre nets in our normal locations in the reed bed site and apart from the Citrine Wagtail and Savi’s Warblers posted about earlier we also […]
Canon PowerShot G7X: Initial Thoughts
I’ve been using my Canon G7X for about a month now. I didn’t buy it to be my primary camera; I wanted it to take with me to take photos of landscapes, flowers and other non-birds in nature. So far I have been very impressed with it. I haven’t done any formal tests, but it […]
Cicada Killer
At about an inch and a half long, the cicada killer is one of our larges wasps. Their huge size makes them look dangerous, but they are usually not aggressive and do not often sting us. They are solitary wasps that live alone; they lack the hive-defending sting-whatever-comes-close attitude of the yellowjackets they are sometimes […]
