This fall, New York City’s Meatpacking District will come alive with a spectacular display of art and Conservation. From September 6 through October 20, 2024, 100 life-sized Indian elephant sculptures will be showcased as part of The Great Elephant Migration, a unique initiative created in partnership with the Meatpacking District Management Association and Elephant Family USA. This outdoor installation aims to captivate and inspire visitors while spreading an important message about human-wildlife coexistence.
The installation is one of the largest public art displays in New York since The Gates by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 2005. The beautifully detailed elephant sculptures, created by indigenous artisans from India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, symbolize a deep connection between art and nature.
Each elephant is crafted from Lantana camara, an invasive plant species that the artisans have repurposed to create these stunning sculptures. The project not only promotes wildlife Conservation but also provides financial stability and recognition to indigenous communities that live in harmony with wild elephants.
In addition to its artistic beauty, The Great Elephant Migration is a global fundraising effort that aims to raise $10 million in Support of community-led Conservation initiatives worldwide. Proceeds will benefit organizations focused on human-wildlife coexistence, including projects that help humans live peacefully alongside some of the world’s most challenging species like lions, leopards, and elephants.
Throughout the exhibition, various events and activities will take place across the Meatpacking District, including art installations, panel discussions, and cultural celebrations.
One notable event, titled “Coexistence and Community: From Nilgiris to New York,” will bring together experts to explore innovative Conservation approaches that rethink how humans and wildlife can share space on a global scale.
The elephants’ journey doesn’t end in New York. After their time in the city, the herd will travel across the United States, making stops in locations such as Miami, Montana, and Los Angeles.
Each step of the journey highlights the theme of coexistence, demonstrating the importance of protecting wildlife while also celebrating human ingenuity.
