Wildlife officials in Colorado are on a mission to capture a unique rodent, the Patagonian mara, which has been delighting visitors in the Colorado mountains.
This rabbit-like rodent, native to South America, has been seen frolicking in Bear Creek Lake Park, located about 15 miles from downtown Denver.
The Patagonian mara is a fascinating creature, standing two to three feet tall with long ears resembling those of a rabbit and legs that are almost deer-like.
Covered in dense gray-brown fur with distinctive white and orange markings, these rodents are primarily found in Argentina’s grasslands and brushlands.
Classified as “near threatened,” the mara can live up to 14 years in human care. Wildlife officials suspect that this particular mara might have been someone’s pet due to its comfort around people. This is a concern, as it might not be wary of potential dangers in the wild.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers have been setting live traps baited with fruits and vegetables to capture the mara safely. The goal is to relocate it to a secure environment where its health and well-being can be ensured.
Officials are urging the public to report sightings of the mara but to avoid approaching, feeding, or attempting to photograph it. Once captured, further investigation will determine if the animal was domesticated and how best to care for it moving forward.
