New Elephant Arrives at Tennessee Sanctuary from Oakland Zoo

The in welcomed a new resident last week: a 30-year-old named Osh.

After a 43-hour trip from the Oakland Zoo, Osh arrived on October 18 and settled into his new barn, ready to explore his surroundings.

He is now one of 34 at the sanctuary and the second African male, joining Artie, who is 41.

Osh’s move comes after the Oakland Zoo lost two of its elephants in recent years, prompting the sanctuary to relocate him for better care.

His former companion, Donna, was transferred to the sanctuary in 2023, and there are hopes the two will reunite soon.

“We are excited to welcome Osh,” said Janice Zeitlin, the sanctuary’s CEO. “His arrival marks a significant moment for us.”
