7 Diseases Found In Animals And How To Treat Them

Animal diseases are a serious concern for pet owners and livestock producers. Not only can these diseases cause illness or death in animals, but they can also pose a risk to humans. This article will discuss some common animal diseases and their treatments.

Ketosis

This is something you may hear about often if you’re in the animal farming industry. Ketosis is one of the most common metabolic diseases in cattle and can be fatal if left untreated. It occurs when ketones, a form of waste produced from the breakdown of fat stored in the liver, accumulate in the blood faster than they are being used. This leads to ketoacidosis, which can cause ketoacidosis-related illnesses and even death.

Ketosis can be caused by many things, including nutritional deficiencies, digestive issues, and the overproduction of ketone bodies. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. For example, if ketosis is caused by nutritional deficiencies, these should be addressed with dietary changes and supplementation. If ketosis is due to digestive issues, it may require medications to reduce inflammation and improve digestion.

Rabies

This is one of the biggest fears for every pet owner because rabies can have fatal consequences if not treated quickly. Rabies is a deadly virus that is found in animals, including cats, dogs, and other mammals. It is spread through saliva, usually when an infected animal bites another animal or person. Symptoms of rabies include restlessness, aggression, paralysis, and seizures.

If your pet has been bitten by an animal you suspect may be infected with rabies, it’s important to get medical help immediately to ensure the safety of your pet. Treatment includes a vaccine as well as rabies immunoglobulin injections. The rabies vaccine works by preparing your pet’s body to fight off any rabies virus that enters their bloodstream from a bite from an infected animal.

Symptoms of blastomycosis in animals may include weight loss, fever, eye infections, or skin lesions.

Treatment for it typically involves a combination of antifungal medications administered orally or intravenously depending on the severity of the case. Additional treatments may involve immunosuppressive drugs to reduce inflammation. Due to the severity of blastomycosis, it’s important to contact a veterinarian as soon as possible if you suspect your pet may have the disease.
