This morning I went out to Lake Apopka. A friend of my told me that he’d found several interesting flycatchers there: Brown-crested, Ash-throated and Least Flycatcher. I had to borrow my daughter’s bike to get out there in time to see the birds and get back in time. I must have looked pretty funny riding […]

Marl Bed Flats, 1/24/2013
I returned to Marl Bed Flats this morning hoping to photograph the Le Conte’s Sparrow I saw yesterday. I saw one again with the birding group that was there, but alas, no photos. I pretty much only saw it when flew from one clump of grass to another. I did, however, get to photograph abeautifulGrasshopper […]
Marl Bed Flats, 1/23/2013
This morning was my best birding morning at Marl Bed Flats, though the photographic side of my brain must have shut down. I went there early this morning hoping to meet with the Space Coast Birding Festival group. I thought they were going to meet there at 6:00am, but apparently they were meeting elsewhere and […]
Little Big Econ SP, 1/22/2013
This afternoon I decided to drop by the Little Big Econ State Park for a few minutes. I’ve driven by this place many times on my way to Geneva WA and other places. I don’t know why I’ve never come here before. Maybe it’s because they couldn’t decide if it was little or big. But […]
Merritt Island NWR, 1/19/2013
Yesterday I drove out to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. I visited three areas: Blackpoint Wildlife Drive, Canaveral National Seashore, and East/West Gator Creek. When I arrived on the island and drove toward Blackpoint Dr, I saw a man pulled over looking into the trees. I decided to look at what he found, and it […]
Pied-billed Grebe with Crab
This morning I went to Lake Jesup Park on Sanford Ave early before work. I got there just after sunrise, hoping to find an owl or other early riser. I didn’t, but I did find an American Bittern, King Rail and all four wrens we have this time of year (Sedge, Marsh, House, Carolina). There […]
Jetty Park, 1/12/2013
Yesterday morning I went out to Jetty Park near Port Canaveral. I went there to see gulls. I wanted to see black-backed gulls, but I was also hoping to get better at identifying immature gulls. I’m getting pretty good at identifying adult gulls, but immatures still give me some trouble at times. I didn’t realize […]
Mead Gardens, 1/11/2012
This morning I dropped by Mead Gardens before work. It was somewhat quiet, but there were some highlights. A Yellow-rumped Warbler posed nicely for me, as did an Eastern Phoebe. And I also found my first Cedar Waxwings of the year. These are pretty fun birds, and I’m always glad to see them.
