The winter months are a good time to visit Haradh pivot irrigation fields as they hold a lot of good birds at this time of year. Large numbers of wintering Harriers, particularly Western Marsh Harrier and Pallid Harrier occur here and I saw well over thirty birds of both species during my visit. Another group […]

Bridled Monsterbill
Today I paid respect to the White-billed Diver / Yellow-billed Loon in Lincolnshire. It was rude of me not to go till now – EVERYONE in the country went and saw it. Some photographers got better results than others but generally it’s a showy bird. So eventually I couldn’t resist temptation and managed a neat […]
Twelve Black-throated Thrushes in Deffi Park – Jubail
After finding four Black-throated Thrushes at Deffi Park, Jubail on 20 January I went back a week later to see if I could get better photos and see if anything else had turned up. On arrival, at first light, I saw plenty of Song Thrushes feeding around under the trees and in with them a […]
Jamaican Hummingbirds
Jamaican Hummingbirds are quite dazzling. A year ago today, while visiting Jamaica, I was blessed to have a visit from a stunning maleRed-billed Streamertail (Trochilus polytmus.) Early mornings, I stoodon my balcony waiting for them to come sip from the bright hibiscus blossoms covering a large bush just below my railing. During my walks to […]
2016 The Year That Was I
2016 was a good year. Lists are not something I concentrate on but they do give a good idea of how the year has been. My Norwegian year list of 244 (246 2015, 244 2014, 254 2013, 258 2012) was not that outstanding but I did not visit Finnmark or Rogaland during the year which […]
Snow Buntings at Salthouse
Barn Owl, Buzzard and Marsh Harrier at Burnham Norton kicked the day off well. A Water Rail was a nice surprise at Brancaster Staithe whilst watching a good variety of waders in the harbour. At Thornham the Twite flew back and forth but remained mobile and a Kingfisher buzzed through without stopping. Lot’s of Skylark […]
Doggone…
Let’s hope not. These African Wild Dogs (Lycaon pictus) are highly endangered in spite of their amazing hunting skills. Loss of habitat has lead to dwindling populations across the continent with an estimated five or six thousand left in the wild. Okavango Delta, Botswana With Mombo Camp
Sandwich Tern
Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis) is one of six species of crested tern. Spotted here in Punta Gorda the slender black bill with yellow tip. I suspect this is one of the southern and Caribbean subspecies, Sterna sanvicensis acuflavida. Although not uncommon and of least concern, I rarely see them among the SW Florida terns. […]
