Red-crowned Crane Grus japonensis



This magnificent crane has a very small breeding population and although the population in Hokkaido, Japan, has significantly recovered, the other populations in Russia, Mongolia and China are on the verge of disappearing due to habitat loss and agricultural practices. This crane is one of the largest cranes and is known for its courtship display which it performs at any time of year and with great vitality. They are also very vocal.
