7 Stranded Dolphins Rescued by Dozens of People, Experts and Volunteers

Seven stranded dolphins are “doing great,” said International Fund for Animal Welfare after getting beached at low tide in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on May 18. Dozens of people, including IFAW, trained volunteers, and AmeriCorps members offered their help to get the Atlantic white-sided dolphins in Wellfleet back into the water, said ifaw.

Footage released by the organization show staff members and volunteers wrapping the dolphins in cooling blankets and transporting them across a beach.

“Our team faced the increased difficulty of rising waters, but we know from experience that it’s not an option to leave the dolphins in this area, because they often get caught in a repetitive cycle of tides and restrand,” said animal rescue officer Misty Niemeyer.

“The first course of action when we arrived was to coordinate how best to access the dolphins and get our equipment out to their challenging location,” Misty Niemeyer, an animal rescue officer for IFAW’s Marine Mammal Rescue & Research team, said.

Although one of the dolphins appeared a bit stressed, they appeared alert and in good health, said Misty Niemeyer. Staff then fitted the stressed dolphin with a temporary satellite tag to monitor their health after being released back into the water.
