Aurora
The Southern Lights
Yesterday morning I noticed a news report of a significant solar flare event which was expected to give us a good Aurora display. Well last night was completely clouded in, but tonight Iris & I went up onto Observation Rock and the above photo is a composite of 10 frames. Exposure 2 seconds. Aperture 3.5. ISO 4000,. We were getting a quite pronounced “searchlight” effect, but not so much of the waving curtains.
Aurora are common enough down this far south, especially a southern horizon “Glow”. Although as our home faces North, and has quite a hill behind it we seldom see them. Years ago when I was fishing we saw them quite regularly when on night passages between Stewart Island & Fiordland .
Peter Tait
Peter Tait is a professional nature guide based at Stewart Island, New Zealand, and he works primarily on Ulva Island Open Sanctuary. Peter has been resident on the Island for over 40 years and was one time Forest Ranger in Charge of Stewart Island. Fishing followed forestry and was in turn followed by Talisker, a 17m charter yacht. He is qualified Skipper Deep Sea Fishing Vessel. In addition to guiding Peter and his wife Iris are hosts at Sails Ashore Lodge.
