When I was down in Florida, the most common hawk that I saw was the Red-shouldered Hawk, while here in southeastern Massachusetts the Red-tailed Hawk is usually the Hawk that is seen. This late winter, however, the Red-shouldered Hawk is being observed by me more often. In fact, over my condominium complex. Here in the city, a pair has been flying over and calling to each other and even landing on the telephone pole right in my parking lot. The other day I had a great time observing and photographing a Red-shouldered Hawk who was looking down over Oliver Mill Park.
Notice that the Red-shouldered Hawk’s breast is solid to barred reddish-brown and its belly is barred-reddish brown while the Red-tailed Hawk’s belly has a dark belly band and the chest is pale with some spotting.
