Dog shoots owner dead after stepping on his shotgun during hunting trip

A man in Turkey was reportedly shot dead by his own dog on a hunting trip after the pet stepped on the trigger of his shotgun.

Ozgur Gevrekoglu, 32, was killed last weekend while out hunting with his friend in the Kızlan Plateau, in the Samsun Province of Turkey, the newspaper Turkiye reported.

Gevrekoglu was loading hunting equipment into the boot of his car after the trip to the Kizlan Plateau when his dog reportedly jumped into the back of the car and stepped on the trigger of a loaded shotgun, causing the rifle to fire at Gevrekoglu from a short distance.

Gevrekoglu, who had become a father just 10 days prior to the incident, suffered from a severe bullet wound in his stomach and died before paramedics arrived at the scene.

His body was been taken to the Alacam State Hospital morgue and an investigation is underway to understand more details about his death.

Local police originally took Gevrekoglu’s 38-year-old friend into custody but he has since been released pending an investigation. Police and prosecutors are investigating Gevrekoglu’s death and no foul play is suspected.

According to the Daily Mail, Gevrekoglu was an avid dog lover and has previously posted pictures on social media with many dogs during other hunting trips, but it is not clear which hound was responsible for his death.

He was laid to rest in Monday.

Background

A similar incident occurred in New Mexico in 2018 when a man was accidentally shot by his dog while on a jack-rabbit hunt.

Sonny Gilligan was shot in the back while sitting in the front seat of his parked pickup truck during a hunting trip with his three dogs.

The shotgun fired by Charlie, a 120-pound Rottweiler mix, went through the driver’s seat and entered Gilligan’s back, breaking several ribs and his collarbone. He was lucky to survive the freak accident, he said.

“Charlie got his foot in the trigger of the gun and I leaned forward and he slipped off the seat and caught the trigger — and it shot,” Gilligan told the Las Cruces Sun-News. “It was a freak accident but it’s true, that’s what happened.”
