European polecat

Mustela putorius putorius – Rare pictures of this forest creature with wet hair from all the rain we had these last weeks. Mustelidae close to the weasel, mink, otter and hermine. Its domestic counterpart is the ferret ( furo).

Short-legged, this animal measures from 35 to 37 cms long without the tail and weighs less than 1 kg for the female and approximately 1,7 kg for the male; in case of fear or threat, two glands near its tail release a terrible stench.

As with other mammals, this smell is also left on strategic places to communicate and mark a territory. It is a carnivore and eats mainly rodents and birds but also frogs and snakes. It is declining in Europe but is very present in the south-west of .
