Historic $100 Million Grant Revealed to Revolutionize US National Parks

In a groundbreaking move, the National Park Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of the US National Park Service, has received a transformative $100 million donation from Lilly Endowment Inc.

This gift marks the largest grant in the foundation’s history and is poised to significantly enhance the Conservation and enjoyment of over 400 national park sites across the United States.

Announced on Monday, this historic donation by the Indianapolis-based foundation will fund critical initiatives aimed at preserving natural habitats and fostering a deeper connection between young Americans and these iconic landscapes.

The National Park Foundation, established by Congress in the 1960s, is currently spearheading the “Campaign for National Parks,” a billion-dollar fundraising endeavor dedicated to the long-term sustainability of the nation’s parks.

Will Shafroth, the president and CEO of the National Park Foundation, outlined several priority projects poised to benefit from this generous grant. Among them are the restoration of coral reefs in Florida’s Biscayne National Park and efforts to protect native trout populations in various Western parks.

These initiatives highlight the foundation’s commitment to safeguarding vital ecosystems and species within the national park system.

Additionally, the funds are earmarked to enhance visitor experiences, particularly for youth, ensuring that the parks remain accessible and enjoyable for future generations.

“This grant will allow us to supercharge our efforts to ensure our national parks are for everyone, for generations to come,” Shafroth stated, emphasizing the inclusive vision behind the donation.

The US National Park System is a diverse network that includes not only vast natural parks like Yellowstone in Wyoming and Yosemite in California but also culturally significant sites such as the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and remote preserves like Buck Island Reef National Monument in the US Virgin Islands.

The contribution from Lilly Endowment Inc. supports these vital efforts, with N. Clay Robbins, chair and CEO of Lilly, affirming the foundation’s belief in the National Park Foundation’s campaign to “enhance the programming in and promote the future vibrancy of our country’s marvelous system of parks, monuments, and historic sites.”

This significant financial boost is set to make a lasting impact on America’s treasured national parks, ensuring they remain a cornerstone of the nation’s heritage and natural beauty.
