New ABC Documentary Raises Questions About Our Affection For Dolphins

What if our affection for dolphins is actually causing them harm? The latest ABC documentary, ‘Dolphins: Is Our Love Too Deep?’ raises this alarming question, revealing the unpleasant truth behind dolphin feeding programs.

The revealing film has reignited public calls for action, leading to a fresh campaign by Action for Dolphins, a non-profit organization committed to protecting dolphins worldwide.

The documentary highlights the detrimental impact of human intervention on dolphin survival. Dolphins who participate in feeding programs experience dramatically reduced exploration and socialization areas, negatively affecting their survival, especially in the face of severe weather events.

Shockingly, dolphin mothers who are hand-fed tend to provide less care for their offspring, which further endangers these incredible creatures’ survival and wellbeing.

Hannah Tait, CEO of Action for Dolphins, emerges as a critical voice in the film. She contends that these feeding programs prioritize tourism revenue over the welfare of dolphins.

She criticizes the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions for going against their own Management Plan by encouraging pre-weaned calves into the Monkey Mia program.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Since the documentary’s release, over 5,000 people have signed a petition demanding a stop to the recruitment of new dolphins into the Monkey Mia feeding program.

The public wants responsible tourism, one that respects these fascinating creatures and their natural behaviors without compromising their survival or the precious mother-calf bonds.

We can all play a part in changing the narrative for these marvelous marine mammals. Action for Dolphins urges you to sign the petition and support the cause.

It’s time we rethink how our actions, even those driven by love and fascination, can inadvertently harm those we seek to protect.

So, let’s dive in, make a splash, and truly make our love for dolphins count. Your action can help ensure these magnificent creatures thrive in their natural habitats, free from harmful human interference.

Let’s redefine what it means to love dolphins, the right way.
