This year has been a devastating one for rhinos in South Africa. Since the beginning of 2025, 195 rhinos have been killed by poachers in the country. The good news is that this number is a slight drop from the same period in 2024. But for a critically endangered species, every single unnecessary death is devastating to the population.
Since poached animals are often trafficked internationally, one country can’t solve this issue alone. The United Nations Development Programme must dedicate more energy and resources to addressing the poaching crisis at a global level!

The South African government has demonstrated a commitment to protecting rhinos with the Rhino Renaissance initiative. But rhinos are still poached almost daily, and the country can’t tackle this problem alone.
Luckily, rhinos have rebounded in South Africa and elsewhere in the past. A century ago, the white rhino was nearly extinct. But this took careful effort by governments.
We must ensure every rhino is protected — for the rest of this year and future years to come! The United Nations Development Programme must prioritize and fund international anti-poaching programs! Sign the petition if you agree!
