December has been a slow birding month for me so far. I’ve been reading the local eBird lists and noticed that birders have noticed that the species lists have dropped down to 10-20 species per outing. One reason I prefer fishing to birding is that I’ve never been “skunked” while birding. There have been many […]

Saving Paraguay’s most important site for wildlife
Lying in the small, land-locked South American country of Paraguay, San Rafael is a site wreathed in environmental accolades, glittering with conservation aspirations yet undermined by uncertainties. San Rafael contains two of the continent’s most threatened ecosystems: Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest and Mesopotamian grasslands. San Rafael protects Paraguay’s largest remnants of the former habitat, and […]
Birdie Beauty Contest
I took a lot of bird photos over the last week and didn’t know what to do with them so I thought I’d have a bird beauty contest. My favorite for this week was this Cedar Waxwing so I’m giving it first place. I thought these baby Canada Geese were kind of […]
Owl attacks joggers and steals their hats
Oregon officials are warning early morning joggers and park visitors in the state capital, Salem, to watch out for an owl that steals hats after at least four people were attacked in a month. No one was seriously hurt in any of the incidents but Brad Hilliard, 36, is one of the joggers who have […]
The Northern Spotted Owl: One of the Most Studied Owls in the World

Confirmation of my attendance was made when I […]
Central Florida Birding, 4/6/2013
This morning my son had a 9am appointment in Sanford, and I had a work obligation in Orlando at 2pm. Not wanting to risk something going wrong, I decided to stay local and bird my way from Sanford to Orlando. I first went to Spring Hammock Preserve, hoping for a Prothonotary Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. […]
Mead Gardens, 4/1/2013
This morning was pretty fun at Mead Gardens. I saw a couple Barred Owls and a few Wood Ducks that were cooperative with my camera, though most other species I saw were not. I heard a Red-eyed Vireo in the park this morning, and I have a brief glimpse at a Painted Bunting on the […]
Barred Owl
Barred Owls are one of our more common owls. There are several near my home, so I get to see them pretty frequently. They are one of the first birds I photographed here after moving to Florida.
