Yesterday morning I went out to Jetty Park near Port Canaveral. I went there to see gulls. I wanted to see black-backed gulls, but I was also hoping to get better at identifying immature gulls. I’m getting pretty good at identifying adult gulls, but immatures still give me some trouble at times. I didn’t realize […]

Mead Gardens, 1/11/2012
This morning I dropped by Mead Gardens before work. It was somewhat quiet, but there were some highlights. A Yellow-rumped Warbler posed nicely for me, as did an Eastern Phoebe. And I also found my first Cedar Waxwings of the year. These are pretty fun birds, and I’m always glad to see them.
Exposure Compensation for Wildlife Photography
Yesterday when I was at Jetty Park I came across a Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret walking along the dark rocks that lined the inlet. Common Nighthawk: ABA Bird of the Year
The ABA bird of the year for 2013 is the Common Nighthawk (you can read more about the choicehere). So this summer, keep your ears tuned in the early morning and evenings! If you hear their distinctive buzzingpeent! call, you may just be hearing a nighthawk. Look up and you may just see them flying […]
American Kestrel with Lunch
This past Saturday at Merritt Island NWR I found an American Kestrel perched on the top of a tree eating his lunch. This Kestrel was in almost the same place where I had seen a Merlin eating a Ruddy Turnstone a couple weeks ago. Usually, these little falcons fly off when I approach, even when […]
Bonaparte’s Gull
There are several Bonaparte’s Gulls that have been hanging around the rte 417 bridge over Lake Jesup. This morning I drove by there on my way into work, and three of them were hanging around Overlook Park. A couple of them were flying circles around pier where I was standing. One in particular was very […]
Razorbills!
This morning we drove out to Anna Maria Island in the hopes of getting photos of the Razorbills that have been seen there. We were not disappointed. We got there around 11:15, and we found four north of the City Pier. Two of them were very content to feed near the shore. They came very […]
Marl Bed Flats, 1/7/2013
I took my point and shoot with me to Marl Bed Flats this morning, but the lighting was pretty poor until I began to head back to my car. The above photo was from the trail back to the parking lot. It was a little contrasty, but since Canon’s S100 lets you shoot RAW images, […]
