Great spotted woodpecker

Great spotted woodpecker

Comparing 2 females –

Very easy to tell one from the other: Rose has curious discolored wing tips…. she is quite familiar with the place but remains shy towards other birds:

Her rival has landed 60 cm below her on the same tree and bends backwards to assess the menace:

Blanche has a more wild temperament and soon both females size each up, wanting the place.

Finally, Blanche hops up and they both face each other for a 1/4 of a second before she flies off… A stroke of luck: they are at the same level to have a good focus on both!

Merci au Nikon 80/400 mm! …puis s’installe à côté: …to a branch nearby:

The guys never come when the females are present, but that’s another story!
