I see ruddy turnstones in the nicest places — ocean beaches, mud flats, jetties, rocky shores, and boat docks. There are usually a few of them around New York and New Jersey in winter. I saw these in Cape May, New Jersey. They can be found wintering on the coasts of five other continents, too: […]

Sparrows at Hal Scott Preserve
On Saturday I visited Hal Scott Preserve to look for Red-cockaded and Hairy Woodpeckers. I found both, but too early in the morning for photos. Later in the morning Eastern Towhees and Bachman’s Sparrows decided to put on a show. They are such pretty birds I couldn’t help but stop and take a few portraits. […]

Finally an American Pipit Photo I’m Willing to Show You
I see these wonderful little birds all the time during the winter. My favorite place to see them is Marl Bed Flats, where a flock of 50 or more may fly overhead at any moment. I have a terrible time getting photos of them, though. I get shots of them in flight, usually far away, […]
Ruddy Ducks
Do you know what time ducks wake up? At the quack of dawn! Do you know how to get down off a horse? You don’t get down off a horse, you get down off a duck! A man and a duck are walking outside together. Suddenly the man sees a low flying plane and yells, […]
Capuchino canela (Tawny-bellied Seedeater) Sporophila hypoxantha
Capuchino garganta café (Dark-throated Seedeater) Sporophila ruficollis
White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel’s)
This morning I drove out to one of my favorite sparrow spots and found a White-crowned Sparrow. This spot seems to be good at attracting them, but for some reason, we get our fair share of the “Gambel’s” subspecies of this bird. In fact, I think every bird I’ve seen here, whether immature or adult, […]
