Thousands of minks have escaped from a fur farm in central Pennsylvania, leaving local authorities scrambling to contain the situation.

The incident, which unfolded over the weekend, has not only raised concerns about public safety but has also sparked outrage among animal rights activists.

The Great Escape

The dramatic escape took place at the Richard Stahl Fur Farm in Upper Augusta Township, central Pennsylvania, as vandals broke into the facility, cutting holes into the perimeter fence, and setting free approximately 7,000 minks, WNEP reports.

“Now, how many that got outside the fenced area, we don’t know, but it was a sizable number from our estimation,” said Pennsylvania Game Warden Mike Workman.

These small, furry animals, ranging from 12 to 20 inches in length and coming in various shades of black, brown, and white, now roam the surrounding area, posing a challenge for local residents and authorities.

A Mystery Unfolds

Concerns about public safety are now at the forefront, as minks can be aggressive, especially when they feel threatened. The Sunbury Animal Hospital issued a warning on Facebook, advising residents to avoid approaching the escaped minks and to exercise caution with their pets when outdoors.

Community Action

Amidst the chaos, the community has rallied to address the situation. Cassie Marks, a resident of Sunbury, stepped in to help, capturing four of the minks and returning them to the safety of the animal hospital, the Daily Item reports. Her act of compassion highlights the shared sense of responsibility within the community to protect both these animals and the safety of their neighbors.

Multiple state agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police and fur farm staff, are now actively engaged in efforts to recapture the escaped minks.
