Mataranka and Elsey National Park We arrived at Mataranka hot springs camping grounds late at night, put up the tent in the dark and went for a quick exploration walk to see what local wildlife was around. The air was laden with moisture – trademark of the tropical climate and I was hoping to find […]
Pine Warbler Friends
I have gotten oddly attached to these Pine Warblers. There are four (I think) total, and they keep coming to the suet feeders on a daily basis. This makes me pretty happy. I’ve never seen warblers at feeders or suet before, for obvious reasons, but I had heard about some warblers eating suet on occasion. […]
Tiny Praying Mantis
I took this photo in June 2012. A miniature praying mantis is sitting on my thumb. It is a praying mantis nymph, an immature stage, and a very cute example of how insects grow. There are two kinds of insect metamorphosis: complete (also called holometabolic) and incomplete (also called partial orhemimetabolic). The monarch butterfly is a […]
Eastern Buzzard | Buteo buteo japonicus
After visiting Kasuga Park I went to the mountains behind Dazaifu. From the highest point I observed this Eastern Buzzard flying toward me. It continued on its path until it was fairly close but then must have spotted me and started spirally upward overhead before finally heading back to the east.

When I arrived on the island and drove toward Blackpoint Dr, I saw a man pulled over looking into the trees. I decided to look at what he found, and it […]
Signs of Spring
It is mid January already and there are many signs of Spring which will soon arrive. Steppe Eagles are already on the move -singlesare seen daily and like each year, Iwonder where are they heading so early when everything is still frozen up north? Asian Desert and Spectacled Warblers are found in many corners of […]
Todirostrum cinereum
A droll little bird, with almost perpetually cocked, wagging tail. Nest a trashy little bag suspended from twig; side entrance and long dangling tail complete disguise. Hops and flutters about, pauses to look up, draws a bead on small insects, then darts up lightening quick in a sally-strike to snap them from beneath leaves (Hilty). I […]
