American robins and other wild creatures have to get creative if they want to quench a winter thirst (Photo: Ingrid Taylar, Creative Commons license). Which season comes to mind when you read these words? parched; desiccated; shriveled; arid; sere; If you’re a wild thing, the answer may well be winter. Sure, the heat of summer […]
Within the Rainforest…
Deep within the tropical rainforest of Central Africa lives an amazing old world monkey: the Grey-cheeked Mangabey (Lophocebus albigena). Foraging mainly in the canopy for fruits and insects, the ever alert monkeys communicate often and will shout out a fierce warning at the slightest hint of danger. Pine Warbler Friends

I’ve never seen warblers at feeders or suet before, for obvious reasons, but I had heard about some warblers eating suet on occasion. […]
Tiny Praying Mantis
I took this photo in June 2012. A miniature praying mantis is sitting on my thumb. It is a praying mantis nymph, an immature stage, and a very cute example of how insects grow. There are two kinds of insect metamorphosis: complete (also called holometabolic) and incomplete (also called partial orhemimetabolic). The monarch butterfly is a […]
Eastern Buzzard | Buteo buteo japonicus
After visiting Kasuga Park I went to the mountains behind Dazaifu. From the highest point I observed this Eastern Buzzard flying toward me. It continued on its path until it was fairly close but then must have spotted me and started spirally upward overhead before finally heading back to the east.
