We attempted to find the Baikal Teal at Ouse Washes today but failed despite checking every hide and walking around six miles in the process. We did find a few Garganey and a Black winged Stilt along with Barn Owl, Marsh Harrier, Ruff and a dozen Greenshank. Hopefully the Teal will give us another opportunity. […]

Last wintering species still around – Khafra Marsh
Whilst birding the Khafra Marsh area in mid-March I saw a few wintering species still present. A few Western Siberian Stonechats were seen in the reeds and bushes along the side of a track with some resident Graceful Prinia for company. The waters edge held both Purple Heron and Squacco Heron as well as a […]
Greater Flamingo flocks – Jubail
Whilst birding the Jubail area recently I recorded plenty of Greater Flamingos in several large groups. Numbers possibly amounted to over three thousand birds, a good count to the location. I also saw Grey-headed Swamphen a species that breed in the area as well as the less common Purple Heron and Spanish Sparrow. Wintering Daurian […]
Snipe and Others
I am posting some images from recent trips to Leighton Moss and into Bowland. My main objective was to photograph purple heron and red grouse. My efforts were shown in earlier postings. At Leighton Moss whilst waiting for the heron to show a trip down to the Eric Morecambe hide was good for snipe. Four […]
A Purple Patch
A purple heron has been present at Leighton Moss for a couple of weeks or so and as I had never seen one I was keen to add some images to my portfolio. Mike and I arrived at the Grizedale Hide where the heron had been showing well. We did see it but all too […]
Pink-backed Pelican in Amboseli National Park
While we titled this post after the beautiful Pink-backed Pelican that we spotted in Amboseli National Park, I could not take my eyes of the majestic Tusker that we saw non-chalantly grazing by the roadside in knee-deep swamp. Hence we made it the feature image (first image) of this post. The Pink-backed Pelican (below) of […]
Nice surprise – Arrocampo
On our last full day in Iberia (19 May) we spent the morning birding in a few sites around Arrocampo reservoir, north of Trujillo. It’s a large reservoir with some birding infrastructure in the northern arms. I haven’t heard about this site until a few days before, and it was surprisingly good there. There is […]
Purple Herons – Germany
Since moving back to southern Germany I’ve been keen to head up to my ‘local’ nature reserve and catch up with the Purple Heron colony there as well as many other bird species and other wildlife. Purple Herons are particularly striking birds, especially during the breeding season. Here’s some facts and other information about them. […]
